Senate to Investigate Torture

According to the Washington Post, the Senate intelligence committee will begin an official review of CIA detention methods used under the previous administration. Not only will the panel investigate what methods were used, if torture was actually used, but also what information they got.

It's about time we get some honest and open government that is willing to look into its past to protect against the dangers of the future. Let's just hope that justice gets served.

This post is not meant to be an attack on Bobby Jindal's speech from the other night (there has been enough of that). Rather, it is a question that I hope to have answered. When the President gives a State of the Union (or this case, Nation) address, the opposing party to that of the President's gives a response. My question is: who picks them? Is it the party Chair? Is there a vote? Or does someone just come forward and volunteer. Someone please enlighten me.

Democracy: A Journal of Ideas Internship

The Democracy: A Journal of Ideas internship is a highly selective program for a small number of the most talented, progressive college writers,

editors, and thinkers in America.

While demanding and time intensive, it is geared toward giving college students a link into future careers in the world of progressive ideas. Interns will assist in administrative tasks as well as learn about all the parts of putting a journal together from article selection to copyediting and fact-checking. The Midwest Academy

The Midwest Academy, a 35-year-old national training institute for progressive direct action organizing, will train community organizing interns in two ten week Summer 2009 programs. Both will run from Monday, June 1 - Friday, August 7.

Paid Internships:

Students will receive a stipend of $3500 for the ten- week period, to be paid biweekly. Freshmen are encouraged to apply for the for-credit internship, since we rarely hire freshmen in the paid internship program. There will be about 12 paid internship positions.

Unpaid For-Credit Internships:

Undergrads may receive 6 credits for a cost of $600 through the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Women's and Ethnic Studies Program; MA level students will receive 6 credits for a cost of $900 through the Sociology Department. Students doing the internship for credit will not be paid a stipend.

College-funded Internships:

If your college has funding for summer activities, and you are eligible, you may apply to be a Midwest Academy intern, bringing your own funding. In addition to the internship application form, please let us know what kind of funding you are applying for at your school, how much you might receive, what the decision date is, and when you need a decision about acceptance from us.

Internship Description

Interns will receive a week of training similar to the Midwest Academy five-day training (see training agenda). They will learn how organizers choose issues, develop strategy, assess their own organizational power and that of their targets, allies and opponents, recruit constituents, and move into action. (Costs for the training, including room/board, are covered in all versions of the internship.

Following training, interns will be placed with community organizations in Chicago neighborhoods from 95th and State to Brighton Park, Kenwood-Oakland, and Uptown, as well as in several suburban locations and with statewide organizations. Preference will be given to applicants from the Chicago area, or in school in the Chicago area. Details about placements will be posted as soon as available.

Additional locations outside Chicago may be added shortly for the for-credit and college-funded programs only. Please check back in January.

During nine weeks in the field, interns will conduct community outreach and organize one or more public meetings. Interns will receive day-to-day supervision from their placement organizations, and ongoing training and mentoring from Midwest Academy staff. For interns who are interested in pursuing a job in community organizing, we will provide job search assistance at the end of the internship or at college graduation (For-credit interns will receive additional supervision from our Director of Special Projects, who has an MA from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration.)

We are looking for young people who are ready to work hard and take on new challenges and responsibilities, who have a passion for social justice, and who want to learn solid skills in the field of organizing. We are particularly looking for people who want to explore a career in progressive organizing. Fluency in Spanish or other languages relevant to recent immigrants will be a plus for some locations. Use of a car will be required in some, but not all, placements.

Boston City-Wide Campaign

Boston City-Wide Campaign seeks interns in Communications; Fundraising; Field; and Research for upcoming 2009 election. The internship will provide interested candidates with grassroots and outreach organizing experience and a thorough knowledge of political campaigns and policy. Intern responsibilities will vary based on their expressed interest and the needs of the campaign.

Hello All!

I wanted to get this out ASAP so you have as much advance notice. As you know, the St. Patrick's Day parade is one of the most famous for NYC. In the past there has been some controversy, especially with Speaker Quinn. In 2007 when she wanted to march, she wanted to wear some sort of pin in support of gay rights, as she is the first openly gay speaker of the council. They refused and she boycotted the event. As such, she does not march in the NYC parade but marches in the Queens one showing tolerance in Queens and narrow-mindedness in the city.

To get to the point, I have a standing invitiation for all of us to march in the parade on March 1st. I'll talk about it more at the general meeting on Thursday but like I said, I wanted to give as much advanced notice as possible. The details are below.

The Animated Credit Crisis

I've had this video explaining the Credit Crisis sent to me the few times over the last week. It does a pretty good job summarizing how we got here and it'll keep your attention. Since it's only 11 minutes, it does gloss over some sections, but it gives a really clear explanation overall. If you've been wondering how we got here, definitely watch the video!

NYU Protest

I am sure you all have heard about the protest at NYU. Most people think that these are some radical students, but if you really look at their demands, they are not so wacky. I will go through all of their points that they enumerated and explain why they are not all that bad (but, remember, I am not a NYU student, so I lack some information about the story). The group, Take Back NYU!, has three points (that are not exactly the same as what the occupiers wanted) posted on their website:

1. The inclusion of an elected representative from the student body in New York University’s (NYU) Board of Trustee meetings. This representative should have rights, including voting rights, equal to that of Trustees, as well as the authorization to make public statements on the operations of the Board of Trustees without prior approval from any administration official.
2. Public release of NYU’s annual operating budget, including a full list of university expenditures, salaries for all employees compensated on a semester or annual basis, funds allocated for staff wages, contracts to non-university organizations for university construction and services, financial aid data for each college, and money allocated to each college, department, and administrative unit of the university. Furthermore, this should include a full disclosure of the amount and sources of the university’s funding.
3. Disclosure of NYU’s endowment holdings, investment strategy, projected endowment growth, and persons, corporations and firms involved in the investment of the university’s endowment funds. Additionally, we demand an endowment oversight body of students, faculty and staff who exercise shareholder proxy voting power for the university’s investments.

My Take:

1. Most colleges and universities have a member of the student body that is a member of the Board of Trustees. Someone needs to represent the intrests of the student body since they are the ones who are directly affected by the actions of the Board. Besides, what is a school without students?
2. What is so wrong with hiding financial statements? What is so secret?
3. Students should be able to see where the money for their education is going. The students are the ones who will know which projects are failing and which are not. School administrations are not the ones who are affected quickly by changes; the faculty, staff, and students are.

The occupiers made these points and:

1. Amnesty for all parties involved.
2. Full compensation for all employees whose jobs were disrupted during the course of the occupation.
3. Allow student workers (including T.A.’s) to collectively bargain.
4. A fair labor contract for all NYU employees at home and abroad.
5. A Socially Responsible Finance Committee that will immediately investigate war profiteers and the lifting of the Coke ban.
6. Annual scholarships be provided for thirteen Palestinian students.
7. That the university donates all excess supplies and materials in an effort to rebuild the University of Gaza.
8. Tuition stabilization for all students, beginning with the class of 2012. Tuition rates for each successive year will not exceed the rate of inflation. The university shall meet 100% of government-calculated student financial need.
9. That student groups have priority when reserving space in the buildings owned or leased by New York University, including, and especially, the Kimmel Center.
10. That the general public have access to Bobst Library.

My take:

1. They are trying to protect themselves, duh.
2. They do not wish the innocents to be negatively affected.
3. They want to protect the financial well-being of their fellow students. We are taught that workers are hired and fired based on job performance, so if they are bad/outstanding workers, why should they get the same wages as other workers? Students do not get Social Darwinism?
4. If an employee takes a leave of absence, they may risk losing their jobs.
5. Do you want people that are supporting war to be funding your school? As for the Coke ban, I sometimes miss having some sodas.
6. This one is wacky, but outside the United States there are more pro-Palestinian movements.
7. Philanthropy?
8. This one is actually one of their better ones. Rep. Patrick Murphy (R-PA) proposed the same measure in the House of Representatives about a year and a half ago. Tuition at NYU is insanely high and getting higher every year (and this is true for almost every school). I almost went to NYU except that I was only given loans and no scholarships to pay for this inflated rate. For most families, rising tuition costs are big issues. It just is not right.
9. Do you want some non-University affiliated group using buildings you pay for?
10. A public education at one of the largest libraries in the United States is a bad thing?

I may not condone the methods by which they protested, but their means were in the right place.

Victory

I wanted to congratulate everyone who debated last night in our successful victory over the College Republicans. Out of my years in Fordham's College Dems, I honestly have to say that was our best performance yet. Special thanks to our fearless leader Ryan for organizing everything and to Dan Anix, Mark Guarnaccia, and our VP Kevin Price for debating.

Last night, the Republicans repeatedly showed that they are ignoring the best interests of the American People, taking a course of opposition for oppositions sake, and bankrupt of ideas. We showed that we are in touch with the American people and dedicated to building a brighter and better future under the founding values and principles of our country.

Let them realize that change HAS come.

Happy Birthday Mr. President!

So, today celebrates the 200^th Anniversary of the Birthday of Abraham Lincoln. In my opinion, he was our greatest President because he spoke to every person. He was a hillbilly from Kentucky (the common man), who became a lawyer (the working man) that was so successful that he was able to send his son to a elite prep school (the rich man / family values). He helped keep this nation together in its darkest moment. And because of his efforts, the idea of working for the good of the group of a whole, regardless of its policies (in this case, the personal liberty of every person), was solidified. Though every four years people swear that they will leave this great nation of ours, they never do because they see that one's respect for a single person underweighs the good of the United States as a whole. By Abraham Lincoln's example, we should unite together, not necessarily behind the President, but by the United States to ensure that it stays the greatest nation in the world.

Building for the Future

Hey everybody,

This is Fordham University-Rose Hill College Democrats incoming VP Kevin Price. I wanted to welcome you all to our new blog and just share a few thoughts about where I see this going.

First, I'd like to extend a resounding thank you to outgoing President Matt Cashman. He has really brought this organization a long way in his time at the helm and shepherded us through what was a challenging but incredible election season. Fordham Democrats worked at all levels to help bring change to America and usher in a new progressive era. This organization worked at all levels to achieve victory, from President Barack Obama to state and local leaders. His continued involvement and guidance as President Emeritus will be invaluable.

Under the leadership of incoming President Ryan Pierannunzi, the new Executive Board will look to continue this work, as well as addressing some specifics that we can focus on now that the campaign season is over (as brief as that break may be).
At the forefront of the objectives will be our mission to build this organization and its presence on the Fordham campus.

There will be several tools that help us achieve this goal. One will be this blog, which we hope will be come a forum through which we can establish a dialogue with our members, the Fordham community, and our entire base of supporters. We will also be looking to keep bringing exciting events and personalities to campus, which we look to improve upon under the auspices of new Treasurer Nina Bamberg and Marketing Director Nora Walsh-Devries. In the future, we hope to work together to reach out to you, our members, in both new and traditional ways.

The most important resource we have in continuing this movement, however, is not the tools we will employ or the leadership we aim to provide. It will be YOU, the people of the Fordham community who know that to take our campus, city, state, nation, and world forward, we must not rest. Our recent success is not an end, it is a beginning to the work we will continue to do in order to bring about a better tomorrow.
